As we resume our study of the Sermon on the Mount we pick up in Chapter 6 with verse 5, and we will look at scripture through verse 15. We read from God’s word; Matthew 6:5-15 “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. (6) But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.(7) But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.(8) Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.(9) After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.(10) Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (11) Give us this day our daily bread. (12) And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. (13) And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. (14) For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:(15) But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

If you remember our look at almsgiving we saw the Pharisees make a public display of it and the Lord rebuked them. Here we find the Pharisees in a similar situation over prayer. The Pharisees prayed frequently but always in public. Their desire was to impress people, with their piety. The important lesson for us today is to know our prayers are between us and God. Yes, there is opportunity for public prayer during worship or a public gathering. We see from our scripture the Lord did not condemn prayer because of the Pharisee’s perversion, the Lord actually purified the practice. Notice what Jesus told His disciples! When the prayed to do it alone and direct it to their father (God). Who would hear and answer. We should not allow any ungodly influence into our prayer life, doing so will give opportunity for it migrate through the entire practice of our faith.

To help us Jesus gave us a model prayer, we affectionately call it the Lord’s Prayer. Where we find it modeling several points; first we see prayer’s place in our worship. God is magnified as our Hallowed Father. Second we see prayers place in God’s work. “Your Kingdom come, your will be done.” This can be compared to the Great Commission. Third, we see prayers place in God meeting our daily needs. This is not only a request but a thanksgiving for all He has done to meet our needs. Fourth, we see prayers place in confession and forgiveness; “Forgive us our debts.” Fifth, we see prayers place in seeking protection and deliverance from the evil one; “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Our prayer life links us directly to God the Father through God the Son by the authority of God the Holy Spirit. In order for us to have a successful prayer life we must have a healthy prayer life. This has at its foundation our relationship with Jesus Christ. That comes by Grace through Faith in Jesus alone. By asking forgiveness of our sin and washing by His blood we are regenerated through His sacrifice by the Cross. Likewise, we must apply forgiveness in our deeds toward others. We should desire a forgiving heart. I realize many reading this are pondering the effects of evil applied to their, some of which I cannot imagine. Yet, the Grace and Mercy of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ can accomplish all things through those who submit themselves to Him. May I encourage to prayerfully seek the Lords work in your life, first as your personal savior, then as your Lord, who leads and guides you to a proper walk with Him. Until next time, may God bless you is my prayer!
