Reflections While Reading--David's Intriguing Prayer
FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 2016

Today, David's prayer in Psalm 144 caught my attention. Many times in this Psalm our minds are drawn to David's thought, "What is man, that thou takest knowledge of him!" Or, maybe we focus on the fact that David understands that God is his fortress, high tower, deliverer, shield, the one in whom David trusts, and the one who subdues David's enemies under him.

Also, this Psalm has imprecatory elements to it. David is praying against his enemies. In verse 11, David prays for God to rid and deliver him from the strange children.

However, this is not what captured my attention, today. Notice, in verse 12-14, David makes request of God for his people to be blessed. He asks for: his sons to be able to grow, his daughters to be as a strong foundation and beautiful, that the barns be full so they would have plenty, that the sheep may have many offspring, the oxen to be strong, and that the oxen would not be lost, that their be no complaining in the streets.

David is praying for the physical blessing of his people. He is praying that the labor of his people would be profitable. He is praying there would be no reason to complain among his people.

Why don't we pray for physical blessings? I think many believe they should just take life as it comes. They believe if they pray for blessing, they would be being selfish. Well, David was not afraid to pray for blessing. Neither should be afraid to pray for blessing.

What made it permissible for David to pray for blessing. We see in this Psalm that David is praying to God as the source of the supply. He knows God supplies. He is not trusting in his own power, but is asking God to supply those things for which he ask. In reality, David is expressing his faith in God to be able to supply his needs.

Think about this, if you are afraid to ask God to supply your needs, who are you depending on? Whose strength are you relying on? You are depending on your own ability and strength to supply. So in all actuality, you are expressing your self-reliance by refusing to ask God to supply blessings.

Since this is the case, maybe we should consider asking God for blessings a little more often. Expressing our reliance on Him as the source of blessings. Maybe then we wouldn't hear so much complaining in our streets.
