We have already examined the connection between the four living creatures of Revelation 4:7-8 and the four banners of the tribes of Reuben, Judah, Ephraim, and Dan in Numbers 2, along with Ezekiel 1:4-11.
Today we inquire into the identity of the 24 elders. Twenty-four points to the heads of God's people in both the Old and New Testaments: the 12 sons of Jacob and the 12 apostles. But are these humans or the elect (1 Timothy 5:21) principalities and powers through whom God protects his people?
Before the Lord Jesus defeated Satan by his death, burial, resurrection, and ascension, Satan and his minions had full access to God's Throne Room. Zechariah 3:1-5 records Satan's vicious attack on Joshua the post-exilic high priest, while Job 1:6-12 and Job 2:1-3 show that Satan is the great adversary and accuser of God's people. However, Job 42:11 declares plainly that this cosmic war is under the absolute sovereignty of God.
Job 38:4-7 reveals that all the hosts of heaven celebrated the creation of the world. Sadly, in the course of time, some of those angels rebelled. Yet, notwithstanding, they still had access to the Throne Room, as can be seen in 1 Kings 22:19-23.
The most ancient Hebrew manuscripts reveal that God entrusted the nations of the world to Principalities and Powers, but kept Israel for himself (Deuteronomy 32:8-9), appointing certain elect archangels as his special agents, such as Gabriel and Michael, in caring for his own (Daniel 10:21; Luke 1:19).
