I think the book of Numbers provides an essential lesson for us as a church – and not just Michiana Covenant – but for the church as a whole.
Usually when you think of the book of Numbers (that is if you think of the book of Numbers!), you think of Israel’s rebellion in the wilderness. But most of the book is not about rebellion. The first 10 chapters are all about Israel’s faithfulness. And the last 11 chapters are all about Israel’s faithfulness. It’s only the middle 15 chapters that focus on Israel’s rebellion!
The story of the book of Numbers is a story of a church that needs Jesus – a church that got in trouble every time she thought that she knew what she was doing.
The story of the book of Numbers has some external villains – but God takes care of all that – the real problem in the book of Numbers is us.
Our biggest problem is not the “world” out there. It’s not that “others” do bad things to us. Our biggest problem is ourselves. We do not love God – we do not believe his promises – and so we do not obey him – or love one another....
