As we compare Scripture with Scripture, we observe that prophecies often have multiple fulfillments.
Notice the events of Revelation 6:14 and Revelation 16:20: It is very clear that the islands and mountains that have been removed in chapter six are removed again in chapter 16. That is to say, these chapters are describing the same events.
We also note the use of the number seven in Revelation. Why?
Leviticus 26:18, 21, 24, 28 give us part of the answer. It has to do with Israel's failure to observe the Sabbath system and the resulting curse sanctions with increasing severity leading to the 70 year captivity under Babylon.
Note, in particular, Leviticus 26:28-29, and how that curse is repeated in Deuteronomy 28:53-57.
That curse was fulfilled many times in the history of Israel. Take the incident of the two women who ate a child in 2 Kings 6:24-31, or how this was repeated in the events leading up to 722 B.C., when the Assyrians conquered Israel, and in what preceded 586, when Babylon conquered Jerusalem, as well as A.D. 70 when the Romans destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem.
