In 640 BC when his father Amon was assassinated, the eight-year-old Josiah became king of Judah.
His grandfather was Manasseh, the most wicked king of Judah (2 Chronicles 33:3-6). But Manasseh was converted in prison and returned to Jerusalem to reestablish the worship of the one true God, as his father, Hezekiah had established (2 Chronicles 33:10-13).
It is highly likely that Manasseh named his little grandson, rather than the apostate Amon. Josiah means "May Yahweh give, build, establish" (יֹאשִׁיָּה yoʾshiyyāh).
