Today, there is famine in the Evangelical church, of larger dimensions than anything the church has seen in nearly 500 years.
It is a famine of expository preaching. As a result, there is a growing famine of Biblical literacy among Christians today. The downstream effect is a growing famine of sound doctrine and sanctified living.
Much of today's Evangelical church is on a diet of spiritual junk food: High short-term emotional energy, but little or no lasting spiritual nutrition.
You may get a physical or emotional high from junk food. That afternoon candy bar at work may give you a temporary energy burst. But you can't live on junk food. If that is all you consume, sooner or later, you will be seriously sick. A steady diet of junk food is disastrous for the physical body. In the same way, spiritual junk food is disastrous for the spiritual body of the church, and for the individual Christian whose body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
What's the answer? Expository preaching of Scripture alone by Spirit-anointed men. In fact, the Bible tells us there is no other kind -- any other kind of preaching is a counterfeit. "Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus" (Colossians 1:28).
This message is a challenge to pastors and church members: Are you, or your church, on a spiritual junk food diet?
