REVIEW: Chapter 13 was exhortation by Paul of the superiority of love amongst the various spiritual gifts and the limits of gifts without love.
Thesis/Context: Love will NEVER fail, but the super gifts the Corinthians so earnestly coveted will pass away.
Super Gift Positions: * CONTINUIST: disappointment, deceit, guilt * CESSATIONIST: arrogance * OPEN: ambivalent anxiety
Verse 8 : 1. Prophecy will pass away. * meaning = wiped away * speak in place of another person * in scripture = infallible Word of God 2. Tongues will cease. * meaning = cease by itself for lack of fuel * connected with prophecy, new revelation * tongue = known language 3. Knowledge will cease * meaning = immediate divine enlightenment * 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 shows tongue gifting different person than interpret gifting = checks and balances for establishing truth and verifying gifts. * When prophecy ceases, knowledge would too.
