We’ve been working through Jeremiah for a while, so it’s probably time for a reminder: “Why are we doing this?”
The simple answer is that Paul says that all scripture is God-breathed and profitable “for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:16)
But if that is true of all scripture, then why Jeremiah?
If we actually believe what Paul says, then we need to hear all scripture in order for “all scripture” to become profitable for us.
In our passage tonight we see a twofold movement from the relationship between prophet and people – with the prophet as representative sufferer (serving as a picture of Christ), to the relationship between Israel and the nations – with Israel being the firstfruits of a world-wide inheritance (like the church).
