"In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins" - Colossians 1:14
Redemption, in the original Greek, is the word apolutrosis, "release or liberation through the payment of a ransom." This word was used to describe the payment made to free a prisoner under the control of enemy forces during a war, to gain the release of a criminal condemned to death, or to procure the liberation of a slave from bondage.
The Bible uses all three of these word pictures to describe the believer's redemption from sin through the blood of Christ. We have been freed from imprisonment by the enemy of our souls. We have been released from the death penalty for our sins. We have been liberated from enslavement to sin. The ransom price was the shed blood of God the Father's beloved Son, paid on our behalf because we were hopeless and helpless, and without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22).
