How do we apply this to civil government today? Our citizenship is in heaven, and we owe ultimate obedience and the surrender of our conscience to King Jesus alone.
Yet we live here on earth, and we must make the best of living in exile here in Babylon, whether her temporary capitol is located in Washington, London, Beijing, Moscow or Berlin. Even though we are free, in order to avoid unnecessary offense, we should obey Babylon's laws that do not force us to sin, and we should pay our taxes -- after all, Babylon is God's instrument, and its rulers are his servants whom we should support.
How do we effect change in government toward Christian morality? There is no direct agenda for that in the New Testament other than the indirect impact of our winning lost people to Christ. When we reach the lost, society changes. Our efforts to stop the abortion and gay pride juggernaut by means of flexing political muscle will ultimately fail. Holy Spirit anointed evangelism will not fail.
