The book of Revelation must be read with several things in mind.
(1) As in Revelation 1:20 where the seven golden candlesticks are the seven actual churches to whom the book is addressed, usually the meaning of the symbols are found within the passage itself.
(2) While dreams may arise from labors and anxieties (Ecclesiastes 5:3), God may also give dreams to guide and protect us (Job 33:14-18).
The visions that the Apostle John is given are very similar to our dreams, except in Revelation both the dreams and their interpretations are infallibly guided by the Holy Spirit.
What is the essence of the vision of chapter one? The Lord Jesus Christ is truly God and truly human. He is the Son of Man of Daniel 7:13-14.
But where is the Lord Jesus? He is right there in the middle of the suffering, persecuted believers of Asia Minor. Against the backdrop of the worship of the Roman emperor, the Lord Jesus is right there with them in their trials.
